Two new narrow gauge railway spurs designed to extend Zambia’s rail network to a major cross-border bridge and a key inland port.

The project comprises the design of two separate railway spurs in Zambia, both built to narrow gauge (1,067 mm):

Livingstone – Kazungula – Sesheke (202.71 km): Connects the future Kazungula Bridge to the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) network, opening a new cross-border corridor from Livingstone through to Namibia via Kazungula.

Nseluka – Mpulungu (192.62 km): Links the TAZARA (Tanzania–Zambia Railway) network to Mpulungu Port on Lake Tanganyika, unlocking a vital connection to East African trade routes.

Both lines are designed for speeds of 100 km/h for passenger services and 80 km/h for freight, with a 21-tonne axle load. The combined network includes 47 bridges, three of which exceed 1,000 m in total length.
